Imagine that you are a nurse leader advocating for a policy issue that impacts the health of individuals and populations or professional nursing practice. You have been asked to share a testimony to advocate for the identified issue.
If your selected policy issue impacts health or nursing practice at the organizational or community-level, your testimony would be presented to an administrative body. For policy issues that impact health or nursing practice at a larger scale (i.e., state or national level), your testimony would be presented to a state or federal legislature.
As you consider a policy issue to address, it may be helpful to reflect upon issues that impact your current or previous work environments; unique needs of the populations served in your practice; issues that shape the health, safety, and well-being of individuals, communities, and populations; or the variables that influence health outcomes and disparities.
Be sure that your selected issue is different from issues addressed in other course assignments.
Create a 2 to 5 minute video recording of yourself addressing the legislative body for this purpose. In your recording, be sure to address the following:
- Introduction
- Succinct summary of the issue, its impact, and rationale for addressing this issue
- Opportunities for the nursing profession to impact this issue
- Conclusion
